Farm Conservation Technical Assistance

As part of a new program, we are working to reach a larger, more diverse base of farmers and producers, to share resources, expertise, and increase access for small to mid-scale and underserved farmers to USDA’s agricultural conservation programming through the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).

Federally funded conservation programs like Conservation Reserve Program CSP and Environmental Quality Initiatives Program EQIP help farmers and ranchers protect and conserve natural resources. Both of these programs can help increase environmental benefits on Iowa's working lands through supporting healthy soils, cleaner air and water, and conserving wildlife habitats.

Together, we are working across the state of Iowa to help urban and rural producers overcome barriers and challenges in accessing and implementing CSP and EQIP practices and contracts.

If you're interested in learning more about ways to implement these practices on your farm, we're here to support the process from learning about conservation options through implementation. Our goals are to help build relationships with USDA staff and farmers that lead to increased interest and commitment to land stewardship across Iowa.

FAQs

  • Iowa Valley RC&D is part of the Midwest Conservation Agriculture Network.  We are working alongside four other midwestern states (Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, & Wisconsin) to reach a more diverse base of farmers and producers in an effort to move toward sustainable land stewardship practices.

Iowa Valley RC&D will provide support, share resources, expertise, and increase access for small to mid-scale underserved farmers to USDA’s agricultural conservation programs through the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).

  • The program will support small to mid scale diversified farmers getting connected to programs for Conservation practices on Iowa Farms. There are financial incentives through Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) that provide cost sharing to install conservation practices or annual payments for stewardship. Iowa Valley RC&D's Conservation Technical Assistance support is geared towards small to mid scale diversified farmers, ranchers, and landowners getting connected to programs for implementing Conservation practices on Iowa Farms.

Funding and Technical assistance for conservation programs like Conservation Reserve Program (CSP) and Environmental Quality Initiatives Program (EQIP) help farmers and ranchers protect and conserve natural resources. Both of these programs can help increase environmental benefits on Iowa's working lands through

    • building healthy soils

    • reducing soil erosion

    • protecting air and water quality

    • enhancing wildlife habitats

    • transitioning to organic

Together, we are working to help urban and rural underserved producers overcome barriers and challenges in accessing and implementing successful CSP and EQIP contracts.

  • Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)

Provides financial and technical assistance for conservation practices that improve soil, water, air, and habitat quality. Among the many practices, some include:

    • Cover Cropping – Enhances soil health and prevents erosion.

    • Rotational Grazing – Improves pasture productivity and soil regeneration.

    • Irrigation Efficiency – Reduces water usage and enhances plant health.

    • Pollinator Habitats – Supports biodiversity and crop pollination.

    • Organic Transitions – Helps farmers shift to certified organic production.

    • Tree & Hedgerow Planting – Provides windbreaks and erosion control, wildlife habitat.

    • High Tunnel + Low Tunnel - supports season extension for specialty crop producers & minimizes pest pressure.

    Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)

Supports farmers in maintaining and enhancing conservation efforts with long-term incentives. Just a few examples include:

    • Nutrient Management – Optimizes soil fertility and reduces runoff.

    • Diversified Crop Rotations – Enhances soil health and pest control.

    • Agroforestry – Integrates tree crops and understory crops for long term sustainability.

    • Riparian Buffers – Protects waterways and improves water quality.

    • Wildlife Habitat Management – Enhances biodiversity and ecosystem health.

    • No-Till & Reduced Tillage – Preserves soil structure and moisture.
